Glossary · Local search

NAP consistency.

Name, address and phone number appearing identically everywhere the business is mentioned — the Google listing, the website, directories, social profiles and any local citation.

Why it matters.

Search engines use these three fields to decide whether two mentions describe the same business. “Suite 4” in one place and “#4” in another is enough to weaken the association, and a changed phone number left un-updated in a dozen directories is the most common cause of a local listing quietly losing ground. The work is dull, which is exactly why most businesses never do it and why doing it is cheap advantage.

How to check it yourself.

Search Google for your phone number in quotes. Every result should carry the same business name and address. The ones that do not are the list to work through.
