CDN (content delivery network).
A network of servers around the world that hold copies of a site's files and serve each visitor from the nearest one.
Why it matters.
It removes the distance between a visitor and the server, which is usually the largest single component of how slow a page feels. For a static site a CDN is not an optimisation added later — it is where the site lives, and it is why pages built this way answer in well under a second regardless of where the visitor is.
How to check it yourself.
Ask your host whether the site is served from a CDN. If the answer is that it sits on one server in one city, everyone outside that city is paying for the distance.
