Hreflang.

Markup telling search engines that two pages are the same content in different languages, so the right one is shown to the right person.

Why it matters.

Relevant in Canada more than most places. If you publish an English and a French version, they need to point at each other and each needs to point at itself. Done wrong — a common outcome — the two versions compete and the wrong one shows up. Automatic browser-based redirects between them are a separate mistake: they stop crawlers seeing both.

How to check it yourself.

If you publish in both official languages, open each version and check the head for hreflang tags pointing at the other and at itself. Missing self-references are the most common fault.
